How to Promote Your Book or Your Business
30-pages packed with useful information (plus bonus materials): $35
or just $20 with the purchase of Five
Fast Steps to Low-Cost Publicity
This workshop was given under the auspices of Ottawa Independent Writers on Saturday, April 19, 2008, at the National Library & Archives in Ottawa, Canada. It was sold out a week before, but three additional participants were accepted at the last minute.
Barbara scoured more than a dozen resources to bring participants the best advice available on this topic, including self-publishing guru Dan Poynter (for whom she serves as a "book shepherd"), Patricia Fry's The Right Way to Write, Publish and Sell Your Book (which she contributed to), along with John Kremer's 1001 Ways to Market Your Books, Brian Jud's How to Make Real Money Selling Books (another book contained a contribution from Bobbi), advice from Joan Stewart (The Publicity Hound, who wrote about Simon Teakettle Ink in U.S. Business Week), and many others.
The focus of the workshop was on creating a BRAND, building a PLATFORM, and devising a STRATEGY.
She packed the afternoon with her vast expertise in business as well as in publicity and public relations. Presented in lecture format, with participants encouraged to network only at the break, she made her speaking notes available to everyone who attended so they wouldn't have to scramble to write everything down.
Now those notes are available to anyone. It's recommended that you purchase a copy of Barbara's award-winning manual, Five Fast Steps to Low-Cost Publicity as that provides the basics, and is referred to throughout the workshop. You can purchase the book plus the workshop notes for the special price of $40. postpaid to Canada; $50. to the U.S. or purchase the notes alone for $35.
Here's what the zip file contains: presentation notes, useful websites, organizations to consider joining, book fairs around the world, print resources, book promotion opportunities, tips for radio and TV interviews, special tips gleaned from a wide variety of sources, and the complete 36-step promotional strategy for Mewsings/Musings.
To order, contact Bobbi via e-mail (BFG at SimonTeakettle.com), to obtain the address where you should send your cheque/check) and to give her a postal address to send the book.
Publicist Randy Ray joined Bobbi in this workshop, showing how to contact the media, and showing what he has accomplished for authors and businesses in his work as a professional publicist.
Some comments on evaluation forms from the April 19th workshop:
I was inspired by the ideas shared. Suddenly the whole idea of publicizing (a business, a book, etc.) does not seem so overwhelming. (Erin Kuhns, Alcove, Quebec)
I now feel empowered and know where to begin with my new business venture! You made something very unknown to me seem very doable and less threatening. (Marianne Frizell, Orleans, Ontario)
This has been one of the best workshops I've attended and both
inspired and helped over a hump!
(Betty Warrington-Kearsley, Ottawa, Ontario)
...tangible, easy marketing tips, very doable; having
alternate plans if some fail
(Moreen Torpy, www.decluttercoach.ca,
North Bay, Ontario)
real-world examples (Roy Acres, Ottawa, Ontario)
I really like your business approach, especially the advice to design a brand and to have it be the identity to all one's publicity, books, etc. (William Bezanson: http://web.mac.com/w.bezanson)
very approachable, inviting, engaging (Linda Wagar, www.lindawager.com, Ottawa, Ontario)
