Movies Which Feature Cats
Helen O'Hara, in an article in The Sunday Telegraph, points out that although dogs have been popular movie characters, many cats have been featured in films over the years. She reveals "the first feline star was Pepper, a Maltese cat born under the floor of Keystone Studios in 1912." After she intruded on a scene that Mack Sennett was shooting, he kept her in the picture, and 17 credited appearances in film followed. She often appeared with a Great Dane named Teddy. According to O'Hara, the next feline star was Orangey, who appeared in films through the 50s and 60s (including The Incredible Shrinking Man and Breakfast at Tiffany's), winning two PATSY Awards (the Performing Animal Top Star of the Year). Later films used several cats from the same litter to play a single role. Four Persians appeared as Crookshanks in the Harry Potter films, and Keanu used seven tabbies from a local animal shelter. |
